Of all the perennial and aquatic plants I've tried in my wildlife garden over the years, the following are some of my "never-let-me-down" favorites. Although each has many appealing attributes, I've listed the attributes that I find most beneficial
to the wildlife garden.
Astilbe
Astilbe x arendsii 'Bridal Veil'
(airy, fern-like foliage; graceful flower plumes; attracts butterflies; great for cutting)
Bee Balm
Monarda didyma 'Marshall's Delight'
(brilliant, hot-pink blooms; aromatic; attracts hummingbird moths, bees, and hummingbirds)
Black-eyed Susan
Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm'
(flowers attract butterflies, American Goldfinches eat seeds, great for cutting)
Columbine
Aquilegia 'Winky Formula Mix'
(uniquely-shaped flowers attract hummingbirds)
Coral Bells
Heuchera micrantha 'Palace Purple'
(rich, deep purple-colored foliage; flowers on long stalks attract hummingbirds)
Coreopsis
Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam'
(attractive lacy foliage, flowers attract butterflies...especially cabbage whites)
Cranesbill
Geranium endresii 'Wargrave Pink'
(non-stop bloomer, attracts butterflies)
Hardy Geranium

(attracts butterflies; non-stop, radiant purple blooms continue into October)

Sedum

(color of flower progresses from pink to deep russet, irrestible to bees and butterflies)
Thrift/Sea Pink
Armeria maritima 'Bloodstone'
(mounds of grass-like foliage; hot-pink, ball-shaped flowers attract butterflies)
Water Lily
Nymphaea 'Gladstone'
(non-stop bloomer; attracts insects and, therefore, dragonflies)
Water Mint
Mentha aquatica
(heavily-scented, irresistable to bees and butterflies, note: invasiveness must be controlled by pulling)
Woolly Thyme
Thymus praecox 'Pseudolanuginosus'
(superb groundcover, tiny purple flowers irresistible to bees and butterflies)
