“a school of gardening that is aimed at creating an environment that is attractive to various forms of wildlife such as birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects, mammals and so on.” Do you dream of creating a garden teeming with wildlife? Imagine butterflies dancing from flower to flower; chipmunks drawing in fresh, clean water from the birdbath; white-breasted nuthatches creeping down tree trunks exploring each crevice for insects; squirrels swinging chimpanzee-style through the treetops; black-capped chickadees nesting in the birdhouse; hummingbird moths probing the bee balm; cardinals feeding their young at the feeder. You can create such a sanctuary when you take intentional steps to make your yard inviting to wildlife!
Simply hanging a birdfeeder will increase the natural activity visible outside your window and provide you with hours upon hours of enjoyment. Add natural food sources, such as nut-producing trees, shrubs and vines ripe with berries, nectar-rich flowers, and seed-laden grasses, and the activity will increase by leaps and bounds. Introduce water into the picture, and you will have created a sanctuary beyond your wildest dreams!
Many wonderful books are available to guide you. You may have a special interest, as I do, in the interactions of wildlife with perennials and aquatic plants; or perhaps you have a special interest in vines that appeal to birds. Pursue what you enjoy! My daughter once exclaimed, “Feeding birds and observing nature is more than just a hobby, it's a way of life.” Yes, indeed. The lifestyle you lead when surrounded by a wildlife garden is one filled with endless curiosity, exploration, discovery, appreciation, and fun! Embark on a lifetime of learning! I've listed a few books that have helped me tremendously with my wildlife garden:
- Roth, Sally. Bird-by-Bird Gardening: The Ultimate Guide to Bringing In Your Favorite Birds – Year after Year. Emmaus, PA: Rodale, 2006.
- Cox, Jeff. Perennial All Stars. Emmaus, PA: Rodale, 1998.
- Ernst, Ruth Shaw. The Naturalist’s Garden. Emmaus, PA: Rodale, 1987.
- Seidenberg, Charlotte. The Wildlife Garden: Planning Backyard Habitats. Jackson, MS: University Press of Mississippi, 1995.
- Tallamy, Douglas W. Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens. Portalnd, OR: Timber Press, Inc., 2007.
